São Paulo Biennial Foundation appoints curator for its forthcoming edition Luis Pérez-Oramas will be responsible for the 30th São Paulo Bienni

São Paulo, February 14th- Venezuelan-born Luis Pérez-Oramas will be responsible for the 30th São Paulo International Biennial to be held in 2012. Pérez-Oramas is expected to begin working as soon as the appointment is made public, putting together the curatorial team that will accompany him in the process of organizing the Biennial. The curator will be also responsible for the 30th Biennial’s traveling shows to be held in 2013 and, following the current agreement between Fundação Bienal and the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he will select the Brazilian representation at the 2013 Venice Biennial.

Pérez-Oramas was born in 1960 in Caracas and lives in New York, where he currently holds the position of The Estrellita Brodsky Curator of Latin American Art at The Museum of Modern Art. An art historian, a writer and a poet, Perez Oramas completed a PhD in Art History at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences SocialesTangled Alphabets, a show featuring works by Mira Schendel and León Ferrari, which traveled from its original venue at MoMA to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and to the Fundação Iberê Camargo in Porto Alegre. Guest curator at the 23rd São Paulo Bienal in 1998, Perez Oramas has also organized several shows at MoMA, among them Latin American and Caribbean Art: Selections from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art, in 2008; New Perspectives in Latin American Art, in 2007; and Transforming Chronologies: An Atlas of Drawings, in 2006. (Paris). Broadly involved with Brazilian art, Perez Oramas curated in 2009-2010 the exhibition.

Heitor Martins, president of Fundação Bienal, points out that “as a Latin American curator acting in a global platform and with an excellent reputation in the Brazilian art circuit, I trust that Luis Pérez-Oramas will offer an extremely positive contribution in order to position the São Paulo’ Biennial in the three domains that the institution interacts with: Brazil, Latin America and the world.”

The appointment process of the new curator began in October 2010, when the Board of Directors of the Fundação Bienal evaluated the background of some 20 potential candidates for the position. Following its strategic process, and after reviewing the candidates’ qualifications and the challenges involved in the organization of the 30th Biennial, three candidates were selected and invited to present preliminary projects.

After a careful analysis of the documents, the one submitted by Pérez-Oramas was retained as the most adequate. “I am pleased to announce, after a judicious evaluation process, the choice of Pérez-Oramas as our next curator. Making this announcement in February provides adequate time for the curator to thoroughly develop his research with the goal of producing a first rate exhibition,” Martins commented.

Besides Oramas, three curators are in the project: André Severo, Tobi Maier and Isabela Villanueva. "A team in which each has a different field of experience and which covers all the dimensions we want to explore, "said chief curator. He said the four will meet in Sao Paulo at least once a month to discuss the project and contact the city and the artists.

Luis Pérez-Oramas will take a partial leave of absence from the Museum of Modern Art, in order to fully accomplish his commitment at the Biennial and he is expected to fully return to his Museum duties in 2013.

São Paulo, 14 de fevereiro – A Fundação Bienal de São Paulo anuncia o venezuelano Luis Pérez-Oramas como curador da 30ª Bienal Internacional de Arte de São Paulo, que será realizada em 2012. Luis Pérez-Oramas deverá iniciar o trabalho no mês de março, quando montará a equipe curatorial. Pérez-Oramas também será responsável em 2013 pelas mostras itinerantes da 30ª Bienal e, mantido o convênio atual entre a Fundação Bienal e o Ministério das Relações Exteriores, pela participação brasileira na Bienal de Veneza.

Nascido em Caracas no ano de 1960, reside em Nova York onde é o curador de arte latino-americana no MoMA. Além de curador, Pérez-Oramas é escritor, poeta e historiador, com PhD em História da Arte pela École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris). Com forte envolvimento com a arte brasileira, entre 2009 e 2010, curou a mostra O Alfabeto Enfurecido reunindo obras de Mira Schendel e Len Ferrari no MoMA, no Museu Reina Sofia e na Fundação Iberê Camargo. Como curador convidado participou da equipe da 24ª Bienal de São Paulo, em 1998. No MoMA, assinou a curadoria de Latin American and Caribbean Art: Selections from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art, em 2008; New Perspectives in Latin American Art, em 2007; e, Transforming Chronologies: An Atlas of Drawings, em 2006.

“Latino-americano, com excelente trânsito nos circuitos de arte no Brasil e atuando numa plataforma global, creio que Luis Pérez-Oramas, como curador geral da 30ª pode oferecer contribuições extremamente positivas ao posicionamento da Fundação Bienal de São Paulo nessas três esferas com que a instituição interage: Brasil, América Latina e mundo”, destaca Heitor Martins, presidente da Fundação.

O processo de escolha do novo curador teve início em outubro de 2010, quando a diretoria da Fundação Bienal buscou avaliar o percurso de cerca de 20 candidatos com potencial para o cargo. A partir dos cenários traçados, levando em conta as qualificações dos candidatos e os desafios que o momento impõe à Fundação Bienal de São Paulo por ocasião de sua 30ª edição, sobressaíram três nomes que receberam o convite para a apresentação de um pré-projeto. Detalhadamente analisadas as propostas, a de Luis Pérez-Oramas foi eleita como a mais adequada. “Estou satisfeito em anunciar, após um criterioso processo, o nome de Pérez-Oramas para curadoria. Fazer este anúncio em fevereiro assegura o prazo adequado para o desenvolvimento de pesquisa mais profunda por parte dos curadores, o que certamente resultará em uma mostra de grande qualidade”, comenta Martins.

Além Oramas, três curadores estão no projeto: André Severo, Tobi Maier e Isabela Villanueva. "A equipe em que cada um tem um campo de experiência diferentes e que abrange todas as dimensões que queremos explorar", disse o curador-geral. Ele disse que os quatro vão se reunir em São Paulo pelo menos uma vez por mês para discutir o projeto e manter contato com a cidade e os artistas.

Para atuar como curador da 30ª Bienal, Luis Pérez-Oramas terá uma licença parcial do MoMA, retomando plenamente às atividades na instituição, após o término da Bienal.
